Privacy notice

In short: the message you check stays on your phone. Only links in it are sent online to be checked, and we don't keep them. If you choose “Ask AI to check”, the message text is sent to our AI to read, and isn't kept. We count anonymous results to improve CheckAm, never your message.
Who runs CheckAm

What happens when you check something
- Messages you paste are checked on your own phone or computer. They are not sent to us or anyone else.
- Screenshots are read on your device. The image is not uploaded. The first time you use a screenshot, your browser downloads the free reading tool (about 3 MB) from jsDelivr, a public file network, which sees an ordinary download request.
- Links found in the message (up to 5) are sent to our server so we can check how old the website is, where a short link leads, and whether it's on known scam or malware lists. To do that, the website name or link is passed to domain registries and, where enabled, Google Safe Browsing and abuse.ch URLhaus. We don't store the links.
- “Ask AI to check” (only if you tap it) sends the message text to Cloudflare Workers AI, which runs the AI model that reads it. We don't store the message or the AI's answer, and Cloudflare doesn't use it to train AI models. If you don't tap the button, nothing is sent.
- Messages shared from WhatsApp into the installed app are held briefly in your browser, then deleted as soon as they're checked.
What we store
To learn whether CheckAm is useful, we store anonymous records like "result: warning signs, type: job offer, language: Pidgin, rules that matched", plus your answers to the feedback questions (did it make sense, was it right, is this your first time).
We never store your message, links, phone numbers, account numbers, names, IP address, or anything that identifies you or your device.
These records are kept in Cloudflare's database service, located in Western Europe. We keep them for as long as they help us improve CheckAm, and at most 2 years.
Hosting and standard logs
CheckAm is hosted on Cloudflare and Vercel. Like any website, these providers may briefly record technical details of requests (such as IP address and time) for security and reliability, under their own privacy policies. We don't use these logs to track anyone.
On your device
We remember only your language choice (English or Pidgin), stored in your browser. There are no cookies, advertising or tracking tools.
If you send us a report
If you send us a message by WhatsApp or email to report a mistake or a scam, we receive whatever you choose to send, along with your phone number or email address. Please remove names, phone numbers and account numbers from the scam message first. We use reports only to improve CheckAm, may keep a cleaned-up example of the scam wording, and delete your contact details when we no longer need them.
Your rights
Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, you can ask to see, correct or delete personal data we hold about you (in practice, only reports you've sent us), and you can complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC). Contact us using the details above.
Children
CheckAm is meant for general use, including by young people checking suspicious messages. We don't knowingly collect personal data from anyone.
Changes
If we change how CheckAm handles data, we'll update this page and the date at the top.

Wetin dey happen when you check something
- Message wey you paste: we dey check am for your own phone or computer. E no dey go meet us or anybody.

- Message wey you share from WhatsApp enter the app: e go stay small for your browser, then e go delete once we check am.
Wetin we dey keep
To know whether CheckAm dey help people, we dey keep record without name like "result: warning sign, type: job offer, language: Pidgin, rules wey match", plus your answer to the feedback question (e clear you, e correct, na your first time).
We no dey ever keep your message, link, phone number, account number, name, IP address, or anything wey fit show who you be or your phone.
